Digital clutter can be just as big a time and energy drain as physical clutter. And while search functions can be great, organizing your digital information will not only help you find what you’re looking for quickly & easily, it will also conserve valuable storage space.
- Don’t be afraid of the D word
Unless you start running out of storage space it’s easy to amass a huge amount of digital data without even thinking about it. While it’s tempting to archive everything, resist the urge and DELETE items you no longer need. - Think like a realtor – Location, Location, Location
Reserve the desktop and main home screen for apps, files & programs that are used on a regular basis. - Get in a group
Hopefully by now you’ve freed up a good chunk of storage space and identified your top priorities. Now it’s time to group the remaining items into categories to make retrieval easier. How you group will depend on the device and what you think about when you look for something. Here are a few ideas to get you started – Group by function (social media, games), color (smartphones & tablet apps), categories & subcategories (docs, pics, music) or user. - Folders aren’t just for paper
If you have a lot of files and apps on your devices you should consider using folders to keep everything together and looking tidy. Again, when organizing your folders there is no right way to name and categorize them. Think about what fits your situation best. Depending on the volume of information and the device you are using, you may need to add sub folders to keep things organized and easy to find.
Just for fun
Did you know that you can color code folders on your computer and label folders on your smartphones and tablets with emoji’s? A quick google search will help you with the details for your specific device.
Just remember, digital clutter is still clutter! Which of these organizing tips will be most helpful as you start organizing your digital information?
